This meaningful work all began when the Ranch of Last Resort proprietors, Craig and Regena Johns, in 1995 found an abandoned dog on the unforgiving streets of Chicago, at the intersection of North and Damen Avenues. His name is "Normen" in recognition of the street corner we were on when he became part of our family. This Chihuahua and Jack Russell mix, we think, was seriously malnourished and sick with multiple infections. As a result of this unexpected new member of our family, a lifelong dream to help animals was started.
The ranch has also been very active in local spay and neuter programs. We started a program at a local Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Center that was inundated with feral cats. Over 25 cats were trapped, spayed or neutered in conjunction with the assistance of our veterinarian. At least 5 of the young kittens were found loving homes.
Several dogs are Certified Pet Therapy dogs and frequently visit nursing homes. Like humans, animals have unique skills and "Bingo" is the regular for nursing homes. Also, the dogs visit physically and mentally challenged children. "Harvey", who underwent major back surgery is the best for working with children, including the "Reading To Dogs" program. Touching the lives of seniors and children is a truly beautiful and heartfelt experience.
In the near future, we will be inviting groups of children to the ranch for pet therapy.
